托福写作话题Topic 1:
agree or disagree: In order to succeed, it is better to be more like others than to be different from others.
It is everyone’s wish to achieve great success in life. But the fact is only a handful of people have their dream realized. This fact indicates that being different from others could be the secret to success. It is my belief that only with extraordinary courage and will power can we achieve success for any given challenge.
In the first place, in order to succeed, we should have extraordinary courage. Different people have different threshold of risk tolerance. Successful people are typically risk takers, attempting to do things others find impossible and daunting. Barrack Obama, President of the United States, would be an excellent case in point. In his attempt to run for president, Obama was faced with extremely strong rivals, at first Hilary Clinton and later on John McCain. As a freshman in politics, Obama did not feel intimidated. He believed in his own strengths and exploited them to the utmost. It is the dare to dream that sent him all the way from the log cabin to the White House.
In the second place, in order to succeed, we should have extraordinary will power. A huge difference between successful people and mediocre ones is that the former work persistently and arduously to make their dream come true. They are strong enough to overcome the inherent weakness of human, that is, laziness. To illustrate, I will use the story of Deng Yaping, a Chinese Ping pang player as an example. She was the top woman Ping pang player in the world for at least a decade. After she retired as an athlete, she embraced another challenge, to learn English. Starting from scratch, she studied for 14 or 15 hours a day, and received her Bachelor’s degree within four years. Such achievement couldn’t have been possible if it hadn’t been for her iron-like will power.
Based on the above analysis, I am led to believe that in order to succeed, you should be different from others. The key to success lies in extraordinary courage and will power.
托福写作话题Topic 2:
agree or disagree: if you can’t say anything good to someone, you should say nothing at all.
Sometimes we find ourselves on the verge of blowing up and shooting out harsh words to the person we are mad at; at other times, constructive criticisms, though hard to hear, will improve the listener in multiple ways. It is my belief that whether to say what’s on your mind or to keep your mouth shut depends on the speaker’s intention and the expected consequence.
I used to work in the international affairs office in my university and it was part of my responsibility to receive visitors from ally universities. At that time, I was having some problems with my superior because I did not like his servile attitude to the superiors and condescending manners toward his subordinates. Once we had to arrange a meeting for a visiting group and I was trusted to prepare the agenda including information of the participants and bullet points of the discussion. I based the file entirely on the material my supervisor forwarded to me but at the meeting it was pointed out that one name from our side is missing. My superior apologized to the professor concerned and blamed the whole thing on me. I was outrageous but managed to keep the strong emotion to myself. If I had blown up, I would have had myself dismissed from my position, and what’s more, my mythical verbal attack would have been intended to hurt his feelings.
Later I changed my profession and became an English teacher. I worked with students to improve their spoken English. Every week I would assign homework to students including dialogues or presentation and I would fly into a rage when I found out some students didn’t take the tasks seriously. They would use ridiculous excuses to defend themselves or stammered a lot during the presentation. On such occasions I find it necessary to give out warning and reprimand, drive it home to them the significance of English learning and public speaking skills. I said harsh words out of good intention and hopefully it will make them realize the gravity of the problem and propel them to strive.
In conclusion, in our relations with other people, we should take a minute and decide whether to release the words on the tip of your tongue. Accusation and harsh words are only acceptable when you harbor good intention and expect little negative impact.
